Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist

Dr. Edmund F. Funai is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist with extensive academic, clinical, and leadership experience in high-risk pregnancy care and patient safety.

Dr. Funai graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and received an academic scholarship to New York Medical College, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at NYU School of Medicine.

Dr. Funai served in the NYU Maternal-Fetal Medicine faculty practice before being appointed Director of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital, NYU’s major affiliate. He also chaired the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation Regional Perinatal Care Task Force, contributing to improvements in maternal and perinatal safety across multiple hospitals.

Dr. Funai later joined Yale University in 2002, where he became Professor and Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, numerous abstracts, and book chapters, with research focused on hypertension in pregnancy and patient safety. His work has been recognized nationally, including awards from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Dr. Funai completed Six Sigma Black Belt training in quality improvement and has applied system-based approaches to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes across major academic institutions.

Dr. Funai has served as Chief Operating Officer for both the Ohio State University Health System and USF Health, and has been involved in establishing Maternal-Fetal Medicine practices in West Florida.
